Pipeline and tanker protest. Prince Rupert British Columbia, Canada. The proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline would pump tar sands crude 1200 km. across northern Alberta and B.C. to the port of Kitimaat where it would be shipped to China. The pipeline passes though some of the most rugged and remote areas of Canada and crosses hundreds of productive salmon streams. A spill along this route would have major environmental impacts. Of even greater concern, massive oil tankers would take the crude oil through some of the world's most difficult to navigate waters. The coastal First Nations realize the risks and that the almost certain ecological impacts would be the end of the ecological integrity of the marine environment which is the foundation for both their culture and economy.
